About the Author
Hodlometer is written, built and run by one person: Konstantin Protasov. The index, the tools, the code behind them and every explainer in this section are mine. The site says “we” out of habit and because it reads less awkwardly in an explainer — but there is no editorial team behind that word, and you should read the whole site knowing that.
Why I write these
I hold bitcoin and ether, and the reading material available to someone in that position is split badly in two: charts with no explanation, or explanation with something to sell at the end of it. The middle — here is a number, here is exactly how it was computed, here is what it cannot tell you — barely exists.
So I built the thing I wanted to read. The Hodlometer Index came first, then the tools that let you check its parts against the raw history, then these articles. Each one exists because I had a question I could answer from data already on the site, and because the answer was more interesting than the version being repeated everywhere else — usually because the honest answer has a caveat attached to it.
What I am not
I want to be blunt about this, because the crypto internet is full of people who are vague about it on purpose.
- I am not a financial adviser, licensed or otherwise, in any jurisdiction. Nothing on this site is advice, and I will not give you any if you write to me and ask. Not out of caution — I simply do not know your situation, your timeline or your obligations, and anyone who is willing to advise you without knowing those things is telling you something about themselves.
- I am not a market analyst. I do not have a fund, a track record, a trading desk behind me or a view on where price goes next. You will not find a forecast anywhere on this site, and the methodology explains why the index is deliberately built so that it cannot produce one.
- I have no finance credentials to wave at you. No licence, no professional standing in markets, nothing that should make you take a number here on trust. If any argument on this site rests on trusting my judgement rather than checking a calculation, that is a defect in the argument.
What I actually do
By trade I work in performance marketing: I help digital products, B2B services and e-commerce brands turn ad spend into predictable revenue, through data-driven strategy, clean analytics and hands-on campaign management. That is my professional site, and it has nothing to do with crypto.
The overlap is narrower than it sounds, and it is worth naming precisely, because it is the only expertise I am claiming here. My working life is spent on the unglamorous half of analytics: deciding what a number actually measures, noticing when a metric has quietly changed definition, refusing to report an average that hides its own distribution, and telling a client that a result they liked came from a sample too small to mean anything. That habit is what this site is made of. It is why the holding-period tables print how few independent observations they contain, why every percentile here names its window, and why the methodology page has a section listing the parts of the index I am not happy with.
The second thing I bring is simply that I built it. The index formula, the data pipeline, the backfill rules and every chart are mine, so when an article says a number comes from a particular source over a particular window, I can say that because I wrote the code that fetched it. Where the data is weak, I know where, and it is written down.
Disclosure
I hold both bitcoin and ether. That is a bias worth stating out loud, and it is one reason the index is built from mechanical rules fixed in public rather than from judgement calls — changing a weight or a window means saying so on the methodology page, with a date. The site takes no advertising, no affiliate money and no sponsorship today; the about page sets out the rules for when that changes.
Check the work, not the author
This page exists because a reader is entitled to know who is behind a number before deciding what to do with it, and because an unsigned site is harder to hold to account than a signed one. It is not an argument for trusting me. Every figure published here is computed from open data by a method that is published in full, and there is a free JSON API so you can recompute it yourself. If you find an error, I would rather hear it than not: it gets fixed, and the correction gets noted.
